Just got back with the state of Iowa to see if I could start this whole thing off in my back yard where I currently have a nice shop already. They said the state has no codes saying that I can't but I will still need the Native Brewery License which is only 250 bucks. Also they said I need to check with the county and see if they have any codes at all. Well just got off of the phone with a lady and they said I was okay to have it in my back yard as long as I follow a few ordinances. It is called the Home Occupation Ordinance. It states many different things like: No signs, no more than 8 vehicles in and out, no more than 1 ton vehicle for the business, yada yada yada... Well good news is that there really isn't that much to it and I can and will abide by all the ordinances. They also said if we had a homeowners association that would not allow this then that would supercede any of the county laws. Well I don't have a homeowners association so I am clear to go! Getting with a few people today to see what kind of lay out I would need for all the fermenters, brew system, and all that. Then I plan to enclose some of the shop and insulate it that way I can control the climate in there. Things are starting to fall into place and they are really starting to come around.
Also I have built homemade items. If you would like to see how I have built my homemade wort chiller, keggles, and mash tun let me know. I have been keeping them off this page but I have been getting a lot of emails and page views I am considering opening a .com webpage instead of a free blog. This of course would be my home page for my business. Please email me and let me know!

Investors and more...
So I have a few investors that are willing to invest X amount of money as long as I can provide them with an spread sheet how what I am going to do and how I am going to make money and them money. I found out a good tool for a good structured plan to pay back investors and possibly get more investors. Take your Profit dollar amount every month and give your investors up to 50% of that profit until you pay back their investment in full. Now there are two different things you can do to get them to want to invest. You can pay them back with an additional interest say 10% interest, or give them stock options which will give them a certain percentage of every profit you make.
I was contacted by Psycho Brewery and a 2 BBL complete system would run me about 8-9K. I was also emailed by conical-brewery.com and they can ship me a 1 bbl system for just under 3K. However then I need to build a stand and all that.
I was hoping to sell my uncle or cousin-in-law's wine in more store, but do to Iowa code I found out that this is not possible. I cannot brew beer in more store and sell anything other than beer. So thats out of the window. I would have to have a seperate store then my brewery for this to happen. Today I was given a bunch of Corny kegs from a local dealer (THANKS!) saves me a bunch of time and money. So now I am brewing my beer and putting them in kegs instead of the dreadful glass bottles. SO MUCH EASIER! AND I SAVE TONS OF TIME! He supplied me with all the quick disconnects, hose and poppets I would need.
Right now I am trying to find out if the state of Iowa will allow me to build a nanobrewery in my back yard out in the country. I have seen a success story from a guy that did this in California. It gave him the opportunity to still hold a different job, plus sell his beer. All for now now but hopefully I hear back from IOWAABD.COM soon.

License and possible brew system.
Today I was emailed by a lady from Iowa ABD. She was very helpful and gave me all the information I needed to know about the licensing I needed to start the brew supply store/brew house. She informed me that I can get what is called a Iowa Native Brewery License (BAN) which runs for $250 for every 12 months. She also let me know that I would need to obtain the Class "B" beer permit which could range from $100 to $300, depending on the population of my city. With that being said I will also need Dram Insurance or liquor liability to cover anyone that is drinking on your premise. Well thanks for all the information Leisa! Every state will have different codes and license requirements so you will need to check with them.
Moving on... I have spent most of my day today and others trying to figure out the best system to go with. Sam from Dogfish Head likes the new Pro-Level Pilot system from Sabco called brew magic. I have also head great things about the B3 system from Beer, Beer, and More Beer. I like their tippy system with the 20 gallon capacity. It is also cheaper then the system from Sabco. I would really like to get a 1-3 BBL system but I am also trying to do this on a very tight budget. I have contacted both places to see what kind of deal and how much shipping will cost. I will let you know what I decide, when I decide.

Starting off..
So I decided to do challenge myself. I have wanted to own my own brewery now for some time. But like many of you once we get into it, we find out how much it is really going to cost and how much money down we will have to pay for a loan to that caliber. I am taking the challenge now to go as small as I have to, but start my own brewery and hopefully show others out there you can do it too. My plan is to start off small by selling home brew supplies in one half of my store, and brew my own delicious beer in the other half. I figured I would be a lot like the great Dogfish Head Brewery when they first started off. I will try and start with a 1-3 BBL system and brew 8 to 10 hours a day. Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head was able to do this so why can't many others? My objective is to show you guys that it can be done and to see many more breweries open up around the United States. I believe that the best tasting beers are ones that come from the basements of homeowners and the ones from the smaller breweries. I will be contacting all sorts of different businesses in this type of business already for direction and help.
